Sesame seed is the sesame plant’s seed (Sesamum indicum). The plant is an annual herb with foxglove-like flowers that produce edible sesame seeds in pods. When the seeds are ready, the pods pop open with a loud pop. Because the hulls contain oxalic acid, which has a bitter taste, they are removed. Sesame oil can also be extracted from the seeds.
